The Last Three Lessons

The Last Three Lessons

1: In Mary's lesson we filmed our last scene. We shot this scene in the college field. This was the knife seen. Because of help and safety Mary had to shoot the scene with us as we used a real knife as one of our props.

2: My group and I attended a lunchtime workshop to beginning editing. We spent a couple of hours putting our clip together, even though it wasn't our media lesson. The workshop really helped us as we were running out of time.

3: Finally on the last day of the practical we completed all the editing and named our film. We were really happy with the result and pleased to complete filming. It was not easy but it really helped us. We have learnt new skills and it is definitely an experience that we will ever forget. I don’t think anyone will. We learnt a lot from the whole practical I think.

EVALUATION

Evaluation

Our task was to produce a two minutes thriller clip over a period of roughly two months. There are many ways in which our media product use, develop, challenge forms and conventions of real media products. Before the practical we watched several examples of previous thriller films. In class we studies about the different conventions of thriller movie openings. The short films we watched of previous AS students were mostly good because they had a variety of different angles and good editing elements in their shots, however some of them had too many effects and made the clips seem rather badly planned and little time put in to the whole production and this really showed in their final clips. Our teachers discouraged us not to use clichéd methods like people wearing hoodies because it makes the clip seem a bit unrealistic. We also watched a documentary on Casino Royal; we learnt about sound and effects. I really think I benefited a lot from this lesson because I learnt how adding sound onto clips can make them very effective. Finally, we also watched clips on from watching these clips I learnt how to begin planning our own thriller, adapt ideas and techniques and so on from watching the documentary. The film that inspired our group was Psycho. For example, Intertextually from Psycho. In our clip we used this similar technique when we did the killing scene in the park. We applied it into a low angle shot and I think this made it very effective because it built a lot of suspense.

Our media product represents particular social groups. It features one person who is a young woman (me). It is quite unusual because in a sense I am both a villain and the victim which is quite unusual in real thriller films because the villain often has one character to play. I am seventeen and Black. I am a Christian but in terms of religion the context of our film is a bit negative because of its thriller nature. So it doesn’t really portray what I am supposed to be doing in my religion because it is against that. The kind of media institution that might distribute our media product is Blockbuster because it is something that you could to watch at a cinema and it has all the features a real film has. And our film could also be a small independent U.K release or we could release it via YouTube and on most networking sites because that way everyone around the world will be able to access it, as it is also for free. Like for those who cannot watch the film at cinemas they can just watch it online.

I think that young adults from the age of 16-21 both males and females would be the audience for our media product. Any class would be our audience but middle class in particular. Tasha 18 attends college and works part time in a youth centre and wants to address the dangers of carrying weapons. She is aware that knife crime has risen dramatically over the years and therefore worries that someone she knows may end up as a victim. She knows the consequences of carrying weapons as she herself used to be involved in knife crime. A person like her would be an idea of someone who would fit into our target audience.

There are many ways in which I could address my audience. Firstly I would promote it, to do this I will have to start by marketing our film. This can be done by advertising it on posters or posting clips of it online. And getting people to leave comments to say what they think of the film. Whether they would like to see it and so on. I would also market my film through its genre and I would advertise the trailers online. Sources like YouTube, FaceBook and MySpace because it is free and easy to market.

There are many things that I have learnt about technologies from the process of constructing our film. I learnt how to use final cut pro. It was not easy but it taught me new skills that I would never have imagined learning. The experience really helped me at most times to be positive and work at my best at all times. I learnt how to do work and have a deadline at the same time. Throughout the whole practical I learnt how to log and capture all the shots onto the Mac computers. Even though the Mac computers were a bit difficult to use at first, by the end of the practical I knew how to use them a bit better. I learnt how to add sound and how to cut scenes. On the other hand, we hardly used the internet as we were using the Mac computers to do all the editing. Expect when we had to write our weekly blogs. Watch lesson we had to log onto our blogs and write what we had learnt and done in that lesson. I had to make sure that I blogged regularly as it would have been difficult for me to catch up as there are so many things that you have to put onto the blog as well as filming at the same time. It was great that we were able to release our movie on Vimeo and on our blogs because it really made me feel like our thriller films were actually like real films. And to top it off the fact that our films were then showcased at the Local Vue cinema for all CANDI media students. The internet has widened the potential audience for your product.

Finally looking back at my preliminary task, I feel that I have learnt a lot in the progressions from it to the full product. I learnt how to work in an under pressured environment. I learnt how to work in a team and most importantly within a group. From the match- cut exercise to actually making the film I feel as though I took this more seriously and really put an effort in. Previously we learnt how to adapt shots from our match-cut exercise into our actual short films. It was really challenging but helpful as we had had a bit of practise. We squeezed every shot in our two min clip. Including match cuts, 180 degree, over the shoulder, close up, point of view shots and pan cuts and many more. The film making process let us explore a lot of things; ideas, different methods, different technologies. Doing a storyboard really helped us because it gave us a base for us to begin filming, because we knew we had somewhere to start. It was like putting our ideas onto paper. From filming I have learnt how to work with the camera and do things within a sequence. At first I was shy to work with the camera but I adjusted and felt a bit more comfortable filming. I had to make sure that everything I did worked with the kind of character I was. And finally, the editing and posting production kind of stressed me out a bit because there were so many things taught me how to always maintain a positive attitude even when it is hard because we had a bit of problems within our group. Some people were not showing up to workshops to edit and not putting in enough effort, so it put a lot of pressure on the group. I wish I had dealt with the situation much better, rather than let it make me feel like everything was going to go wrong. It’s about not letting things get to you. It made me want to work harder on the editing because it felt like I just had to look past all the problems and do the important thing which was to complete the film and all the editing. Overall I have had a great experience and learnt a lot of skills and built some really good relationships with my group members.

Day 4 = Bedroom scene at lippi's house

The next lesson we went to lippi's house to film the second scene. this was the scene of the bedroom when the possesed girl woke up the next day. we also did the scene of the screne titles by using props like knives and possesed books. This scene worked very well as it was well organised and well timed. we used a lot of natural lighting for the scene. and we used fake blood.
The next lesson i was off sick but we will reschedule the next filming for sometime in the half term as the next lesson with Dan is not on due to friday being aq teacher's training day.

Day 2 = Filming our first clip scene in the library

Today's lesson with dan we began filming our thriller. we decided to gather some props for the scene, thriller possesed books and went into the library to beging filming. We had loads of different types of shots and did really well that friday. This scene was of the main character in the library. it was filmed in the afternoon and we used natural lighting. before the end of the lesson we went back to the classroom and planned our next scene: we discussed all the props that we needed for the next filming session with mary. However the next lesson was cancelled so we missed a lesson of filming as the college was closed due to bad weather conditions.

We managed to catch up once the college was re-opened. That lesson we logged and captured all our filming and made sure to save it on our hard drive. We did not start the editing as we had much filming left to do.

During this session, we worked mainly on the Mac’s and worked on which shots to do next. This also gave us a chance to see which shots we may need to re do, or any we may have missed out.

Day 1 = Recording our news speech

Today In Mary's lesson, we prepared and gave Mickey our 'breaking news' speech to record. Whilst this was being processed, our group planned our storyboard and production schedule. After we finished planning our story body the end of the lesson was over. And left mickey to record our speech onto a cd.

Real Thriller Idea

Today in dan's lesson we had to present our final and real thriller ideas with our groups to the whole class. We discussed in our groups what we wanted our thriller clip to be e.g the type of camera shots , setting and sound. if down was pleased with the idea then he let us keep our idea. This learn was more of a planning lesson rather than a practical lesson:

Our thriller idea was:
A girl who is possesed. our clip will be on her having a a bad dream. she wakes up to have blood on her hands. our main setting will be in a church perhaps at night time and the other one will be in a bedroom. we will use props such as defining dictionaries. knives and casual clothes. I dont really want to give out too much but Dan and the other media staff were alright with our idea so we have got the go ahead to start filming next lesson from Mary's lesson. The group is really pleased. Before the end of the lesson we started planning within our groups.

Filming our match-cut clip -( draft )

Today's lesson with Dan we filmed our match-cut clip within our groups that we planned the previous lesson when mary was absent, We started off by deciding our setting. We ended up changing our setting at the last minute. At first, our setting was in the canteen but there were too many people sitting there. This was not very practical as this could have affected the sound techniques.

So we decided to change our setting to the third floor corridor. This was a good setting as there were a lot of mise en scene to give our clip an establishing shot of London.

The next lesson we had Preliminary Match Cut Exercise we went into the mac room. we used the editing suite to edit our clip. e.g to make cuts and use different camera angles and different shots. we added techniques like sound and edited our clip entirely. Our clip had different shots e.g match cuts. Once our clip was finished we were allowed to go home.

A video above shows our film after it was editied. I think that the secong practice film went really well it was another chance for us to refresh our minds on how to work in a group and prepare us for shooting our thriller film, in terms of practising, editing and so on. I definately prefer this practise film to the old one because in the short space of time we have developed different techniques and learnt a lot of new things. In this shot we have used more different types of shots and used a lot of space to create detail and a very good mise en scene. I feel that i followed all the forms and conventions of real films a bit because we took on techniques from other films and used them in our own practise films. We also used different types of lighting and narrative especially the mise en scene as i have mentioned already.

Finally, i think that our practise films allows us to many comments about our presentation. We are deffinately learning new things and a lot more confident and as a result we are making this show in all our practicals.

Match cut clip plan

The next lesson Mary was not in so Mick and Mareesa covered the lesson. We did a task on Match cuts in video clips.

Our first task was to Make a list of shots of our own in a given scenario. The Synopsis was 'eastlondon, 3pm. A man chain smokes as he sits at his home PC. He copies confidential computer files and plans to a CD. He packages them and is seen posting them.'
We then in pairs made our own version of the clip using different camera shots and establishing shots of eastlondon.
We then watched a clip thay Mickey made and compared it to our own. There were a couple of similiarities such as long shots of the man walking to the post box and many more.We analysed these similarities with the class.

We were then told to gather up in our groups and plan our own clip for next lesson. The synopsis is: 'A character opens a door, walks into a room, sits down opposite another character and they share a few lines of dialogue'.
We all put in our own ideas and combined it altogether to create a clip. Which we will be filming next lesson!

Film Openings & Analysing Previous Student's Work

In today's lesson with Dan we watched a documentary on film openings andd learnt the following:
  • "A good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little" because certain amout of information to the audience can limit their interest
  • Thomas Sutcliffe says "Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. While there are many different types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irrestistible". He means a way of attracting the audience's attention by making them want to watch the whole film

We then analysed previous students' work on their choice of location, camerawork, editing, lighting, and their use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound. My favourite video was Video5 because it attracted me the most in the audience, I understand what the film was about as it had different technique elements to keep me engaged to the film. I liked the way the opening didnt have too many settings. there were only was two locations (police office and essex road station) The opening seemed well planned and a lot of time put into producing. And finally, the use of sound; the non diegetic sound created more of a suspense. The editing sequences were shown in slow motion and there was little dramatic editing. There were various angle shots e.g match cuts.

The thriller that i disliked the most was Video6 because the clip showed poor planning, showed lack of media techniques and it was all rather messed up. And it showed through their insufficient footage. I also didn't like the dialogue they used and thought the clip looked far from being a thriller movie but more like it was rushed and not enough time put into planning.

Sound Editing

Today in mary's lesson we went into the mac room. we watched a preview clip on sound. we learnt different elements and had A go at some activities.

We learnt how to edit our thrillers with sound by using a software on the Mac computers.

We also edited sounds of different scenes in the film 'Casino Royale'

Sunday, 4 January 2009

In this lesson we were shown several thriller openings:
28 days later, The shining, collateral and What lies beneath.
We also explored the different types of thrillers such as -Psychological, Supernatural thrillers, Comedy Thrillers, Political thrillers, Romance/Murderous, Passion thrillers, Horror Thrillers, Action thrillers and many more.
As we analysed the clips, we looked at he mise en scene, the lighting, use of camera angles, music, editing and setting.

The clip that interested me the most was what lies beneath. I really liked the camera angles and movement. They were a lot of different camera angles such as over the shoulder. This angle to highlighted tension and built tense in the bath tub scene. There were more shots such as tilts and low angles. Long shots were in action when the woman was in the bathroom.
The clips were short but continuous. The lighting was natural and and quite bright and dull at times. There were a lot of sound techniques such as the tub water sucking to indicate the atmosphere and not so pleasent setting. The mise en scene that i like the most in this film would have to be the type of Lighting that is used, as i think its the most important thing in a film as it sets the mood.

I particularly liked the editing of the scenes. There wasn't too much cutting. I like how the opening scene started with tension and freaky. This made me anxious and curious in what was happening. it built a lot of tense and suspense. It gave me ideas for how i would like my thriller to be like. And ideas and techniques that i could adapt onto my thriller.
For my thriller, id like to create a sense of confusion and mystery.
If i had to change anything about the film it would possibly have to be the moral of the film as i think it could be much better.

Thriller

First Lesson :
We watched a thriller film called 'Let 'Em Play God' , we had to analyse film on a basic note

• Every maker of mystery movies aims at getting the audience on the edge of their seats, keeping them there is called suspense.
• You have suspense when you let the audience play god.

• It is important in a story with sinister implications to use counterpoint, great contrast between situation and background,
To make the audience feel that adreneline every time something they know is about to happen.

The things that scare us:

• Blood
• Scary voices
• The dark
• Sudden shock
• Sudden loud sounds
• Silence
• Dead bodies
• Bathroom scenes
• Knives

The Second lesson we watched a short camera demonstration clip. We were taught how to use the camera using a tripod and how to insert and eject a tape in and out of the camera and also how to turn it on and off.
We learnt how to insert a battery into the camera and how to take it out.

We were shown how to open up a tripod and attach it to the camera, how to set it up depending of what type of camera shot to use e.g- high angle or low angle.
After being showed the video, we took turns in setting up the camera and placing it on the tripod. We also learnt some rules when using the camera and tripod, such as, to check if the camera is correctly set up in case if it falls. This was done by lifting the tripod.

After the clip was finished, we were set a task within our groups to shoot our own footage. It to included two people playing cards.
As a group we decided to make a violent footage including a gun. Our first shot was a mysterious villain walking through the coridoor only showing their legs. After that, when they open the door to enter a room, the camera tilts up from the legs to show the face. Another person is sitting on the table ready to play cards, the villain then joins that person. We have close ups of the villains evil looks to the other person. And then suddenly, the villain, throws the cards on the ground and shows the gun on the other person. Then there is an ending where the other person is dead on the floor and (me)the villain throwing the gun to the floor.

We had a minimum of 12 shots to create our mystery and suspense scene
We included the following:
Mcu shots
over the shoulder shots
low and upper angle shots
We used the following Props:
two 'game players'
two chairs
a table and
pair of cards.

The next lesson i was off sick

There fourth lesson:
In our practise filming session, Our class was moved to the editng suite, where were taught how to use the editing software 'final cut pro'.
We were taught how to convert our footage on to the computer, using a disk.
We were shown how to sequence a footage onto a timeline. And how to edit video by using transitions and sound, how to sound onto a clip. Iwas really happy with the camera work because everyone's effort was put in.I liked all the shots because we had little cutting to do. I learnt a lot about mise en scene because i have realised that there is a lot than just whats in front of you e.g detail and timing. We managed to create an element of suspense by adding sound. We managed to meet all our targets including filming the extra 5 seconds before and after each shot. We used all the conventions from real thriller film e.g props ; the gun and the costume e.g black clothes because villains usually wear them in such films.
As Dan was absent we showed the cover teachers our clip and the rest of the class and they really liked it they didnt really have any negative feedback for us. Finally i think that our practise was really really good because everyone contributed something into it.

The video below shows editing on the footage that we had done.
